Shell jewellery
It's a known fact that every summer in New Zealand, it rains. Shell necklaces are a great way to stave off cabin fever and I make sure that the children collect loads of suitable shells when on the beach. They are stored in ice-cream tubs and even the collecting and sorting of the shells can become a task, as I get them to store the same kind and size of shell in one tub. We use string, wool or even fishing line to make the necklaces and I keep a supply of hooks and eyes to fasten them. You may have to tie the knots to start the necklace off and then they are away.
Shirring elastic is a good standby as you can use it to make bracelets as these will need to be stretched over the hand. Remember if the sea-shell does not have a little hole in it, you will need to have an electric drill with a steel bit and get some kind adult to make the holes.
